I have not used & path before (the only & command I have used is & y/n), but it seems to me that you might have more success if you invoke by
 
                      ...if z = 0 then esc: & path : &"/HD/APPLEWORKS/DB" :
        rtn rtn find.... etc

The best solution of all is to move up to Ultra 4.1. This replaces the few &
commands which exist with a huge array of "dot commands". For example, instead
of using <& path : & /PATHNAME> you would use <.setpath "/PATHNAME">. 

Ultra 4.1 has so many incredible features, you should get it if your are serious
about AW 3.0 macros.
