RAM-Based Mouse or Serial Driver Feasible?

Could something similar be done to write a RAM-based GS/OS driver to access
the built-in mouse, modem, or printer port? Then I could still use the
built-in port, but have a different card in one of those slots. It seems 
like such a driver would "simply" have to duplicate the firmware code 
that would normally be switched in.

Of course! I'm just curious whether such a scheme is at all feasible.
My OctoRAM memory card uses so much space that I can't put my hard disk's 
RAMFast in slot 7. So, I put it in slot 6, and cannot use my 5-1/4" drive.
I'd like to stick the RAMFast in, slot 4 but have GS/OS programs still
be able to read the mouse. (I understand this is possible in ROM 3 systems,
but I have ROM 1.)
