I use the SUPRA Faxmodem v32.bis - 14,400 baud...
it supports fax
is external
has LED AND easy to read codes (2 char codes appear in window)
supports voice mail
can be had for $279 from Computability in Milwaukee (800 554 9950)
has a phone jac (most externals do)
100% hayes AT compatible
non-volital memory for settings and phone numbers (I forget how many of ech)
takes no more room than any othre SUPRA modem I've seen
Sound is adjustable via AT command
supports Caller ID
