A lot of the keys feel mushy when I press on them. I've lifted a few
up and noticed that some of them respond very slowly when touched.
I was concerned about damaging the key caps since I don't have any
replacement parts for this machine.

Not sure. All I can say is that the area where the machine was stored
was rather damp. Maybe the cold temperature has caused the keys to
recede backwards. In any case, I'll try what you said about working
the keys.
