    No doubt.  I think it has something to do with my 'umask' setting.  I have
to set it to 000 and that seems to work on some of the files, but afterwards
I check the directories, and they are all in mode 700 or something similar.
If I manually create the directories, things work out.

    Any tar file I don't make myself.  It definitely sounds like something
I'm doing wrong then (or a wierd version of tar).  I'll check with the powers-
that-be here...
