Right, Apple hoped to get Apple II users to buy Macs by introducing a
completely new and awesome Apple II :-) At the time the IIgs came out,
I was in the market for a new computer. I looked at Macs, IBMs and
the IIgs. IBMs were out. The Mac was out because it provided
no upgrade path from my Apple IIe (all my old software would
have been useless), and it had no color. So, I got the IIgs
and have been very satisfied! I think Apple made a mistake when
they introduced the IIgs, though. If Apple was planning to win
Apple II users to the Mac by introducing the IIgs, I don't know
what they were thinking. What they should have done was introduce
the Mac LC w/ IIe card. This would have provided a nice transition
for II users to the Mac world. Although, I would have wanted the
Mac LC to have more slots like the IIe did. If Apple had introduced
the Mac LC w/Apple IIe card instead of the IIgs, I'd probably
own one today. But, they didn't and Apple has paid dearly for
this mistake with unhappy Apple II and IIgs users who are feeling
abandoned.
Don't get me wrong, I like my Apple IIgs with a passion! I just think that
if Apple didn't plan on supporting the IIgs along with the Mac, they should
have made this point know way earlier and should have provided a good
upgrade path from the Apple IIe, like the Mac LC w/IIe card would have
been.
