Not strictly true.  I believe that "freeze", when configured correctly, can
reduce the size of GIF files further.  You can do much better than LZW
(thought not nearly as quickly).

BTW, there are some programs in the MS-DOS world which do some (lossy)
transformations on the image to make it compress better.
