That's typically due to an unclaimed interrupt.  I've encountered that problem
with programs like Appleworks where I have my printer port set up to allow 
interrupts since I also use it as a null modem port.  But that's on a //e.  
The same occurance using Proterm causes it to just hang because it's trying
to service the interrupt as having come from slot 2 and not slot 1.

I don't know what voltage levels your talking about, but your main power supply
should never deviate from five volts by more than a percent or two.  And 
typical RS-232 levels are +/-12 volts (+/-9 volts with some newer modems and
computers).  If you're talking about modifications to an accelerator then that
could be causing your problem.
