Lets seee if can answer this now that I got the docs infront of me.  The 1488 is
a quad line driver while the 1489 is quad line receiver.
the diagram for the 1488 is
          Vee 1           14 Vcc
      Input A 2           13 Input D1
     Output A 3           12 Input D2
     Input B1 4           11 Output D2
     Input B2 5           10 Input C1
     Output B 6           9  Input C2
        Gnd   7           8  Output C
the diagram for 1489 is
			Input A 1           14 Vcc
	     Response Control A 2           13 Input D
		       Output A 3           12 Response Control D
			Input B 4           11 Output D
	     Response Control B 5           10 Input C
		       Output B 6           9  Response Control C
			    Gnd 7           8  Output C
