Lord I HOPE not!  The drive head is never supposed to TOUCH the platter!  If
it ever does, that's called a HEAD CRASH!  The head should always be isolated
from the disk by a thin layer of air.  The damage and wear that would occur 
if the head actually rode on the disk would be immense.  The high data 
storage, etc, is achieved by spinning the drive extremely fast constantly.
That couldn't be done if the head rubbed against the platters.  That's why 
you should NEVER move a hard drive while it's running, and be very careful
when it's off.  And why any contaminants that would affect the surface of 
the disk would be disastrous.
