archive help needed (was: uemacs311c)

I used binary mode to ftp the uemacs archive from two different sites,
but when I get it down to my IIgs, Binscii doesn't know what to do with
it, and GSHK reports it as an unknown archive type.  I'm using ProTerm's
kermit transfer to download it from the school's unix system to my II,
but obviously I'm must be leaving something out.  Any help is appreciated.
