It is not possible to use a DeskWriter from ProDOS8 due to the fact that 
it is a QuickDraw printer and has no internal fonts.  Ordinarily, programs 
such as ProTERM will just dump the text out the printer port as ASCII, and 
it is up to the printer the interpret the information and print it.  The 
DeskWriter works on the Mac (and the IIGS with Harmonie) by simply 
printing bitmaps of the current document (alright, it's a bit more complex 
than that, but you get the idea).  In ProDOS 8, you're not sending your 
text out as graphics, but rather as straight ASCII.  And the DeskWriter, 
with no built-in fonts, has no way to output this information.

The same problem applies to the StyleWriter, and any other printer without 
internal fonts.
