Fax Modem Questions

I've been seeing some faxmodems for pretty cheap lately.  I've been
thinking about upgrading my 1200 baud modem to a 2400.  Since it
looks like I can get a cheap faxmodem for about the same price as a
2400, I'd like to know what the difference is between the cheap
faxmodems and the expensive ones.  I don't plan on using the fax
feature all that often but it would be nice to have.
 
Also, what faxsoftware is available for the GS and how does it work?
does it come as a DA that you can use from any program?  Is it more
like a printer driver?  Or is it a standalone application?
 
I know there was a big discussion about this a while back.  I wasn't
interested at the time and didn't read the messages.  I'll go back
and see if any are left.
