is BASIC in memory?

I have a copy of a program called slotscan, which tells you what kind of
machine you have and what all is in the slots. The interesting thing about it
is that it quits via a quit call if you run it from a selector but returns to
BASIC if you run it with BASIC's smart run command. I'd like to be able to do
that too, so here's my question: is there a reliable way to check if BASIC is
still in memory and can be restarted? And if so, how? To avoid any confusion,
what I call BASIC is the system program you use to run Applesoft programs,
the thing some people call BASIC.SYSTEM.
