At this point, I'm thinking I'll unsolder the PCB connector from the drive and tack on the power leads directly. Inelegant, but it will permit me to mount the drive rightside up.
Hang on a sec before you do that and let me see if I can find one here. It'll be a lot easier than having to unsolder that connector from the drive. You went this far to make the setup rock. Definitely share pics when done!
As it turns out, I doubt that any connector would clear. What I ended up doing was pulling the pins from the power supply plug, cutting them off at about 1/8" longer than the mating pin on the drive and soldering the wires to the end at a right angle. Since there is no polarizing key anymore, I marked the drive VERY carefully with red and yellow dots :-). A definite case of check 2x before powering up once. Even with these heroic measures, it clears the molex plug on the power supply by maybe 1/16"!
I have it back together now and basically operational. The Connerdrive is mounted and spins up fine. The 7805 regulator is wired in and I'm reading all four voltages within reasonable tolerances. Too late to drag a IIGS out of the garage, but I'll probably fire up the system within the next day or so.
Will try to get pictures, but things are SO crowded together inside that it's going to tough to make things out.
So, I've spent $150 and several evening's worth of bench time to restore a unit that sells for perhaps half that much... But, it's been fun and I guess that's what counts. I get to add an AE Vulcan to the collection!
