Might be the hacked serial cable I guess, the DB25 didn't have a wire for ping 22 (pin 9 on the DB9) or Pin 19 which looks like the Super Serial Card is wired to as well for some reason.

I switched to a normal cable that I found at a local recyclers type store and an older laptop with Windows XP and it worked.

Now I'm wondering if I should get a CF type HD for the Apple...

Any of the CF drives is a great addition to any of the Apple II computers, and, you should never be a'wonderin' at all. Get one.
