First thing, as you've probably noticed from the other responses, this
is not an appropriate group for Mac questions. You'll do better in the
future in the comp.sys.mac.* hierarchy. I've set follow-ups.
As to your actual question: There's no "Apple gimmick" here. What there
primarily is, is a news item that either was incorrect or you misread.
Apple reduced the price and upgraded the specs on almost all of their
notebooks. No desktops, and not the plastic MacBook.
If you're not seeing the new prices (and specs) there's something wrong
with your browser. Do you even see the "new" tags over the notebooks and
iPhones?

I saw a truck today that had "AAA Batteries / Delivered and Installed" on the
side. My first thought was: That's a really weird business model. How many
inept people have urgent need of skinny little battery cells?
