I have a dim memory of having to move records between two modem-equipped
computers: an Apple II+ and a PC XT, IIRC. I ran a phone cable between
the modems and wrote a Basic program to print records to slot two, while
capturing the text stream on the PC. I was surprised that no telco was
required. It took days at 1200 bps.
