That specific pursuit has never tickled my pickle, but it does occur
to me that there's a very easy way to image almost all such disks
"perfectly" - take a standard double-density PC drive [since it has an
index sensor], and connect the output of the head preamp directly to
an analog capture device (well, through a buffer stage to match
impedance and levels). A PC sound card would only do up to 48kHz so
specialized equipment would be preferable.

Turn on the spindle motor, step the head to track 0 and  start
recording. Wait for two index pulses to occur. The span of recorded
data in between those two marks is the analog data stream for the
entire track. Half-step or quarter-step towards track 39. Lather,
rinse, repeat.
