I remember servicing a security system during one of my co-op work terms
during college and that is the type of thing they had on their windows.
A .5" wide strip of silver foil (not unlike tin foil) an inch or two
inisde the edges of the window to make a circuit.  If the window broke,
the foil would most likely be broken and the normally closed "switch" of
the foil would be opened signalling the broken window.
