It's not about which query can be shorter -- it's about what is
necessary to copy and paste out of the original, longer URL to make a
shorter one that doesn't wrap and break in some news readers. With
minimal effort.

Your method, while efficient in appearance, assumes the user is going
to paste or type in the search link, followed by the auction number.
I, being lazier than that, will just copy and paste a minimal link.

It's all about the lazy. =P
