My money's on the low RAM. I've never been able to afford hi-speed
drives. My old PIII / 1.5 GHz desktop had 1/2GB RAM, took ~30 minutes.
My newer Toshiba Satellite A205 laptop has lots 'o RAM, but the
significant
amount of HD space (120 GB) and the huge amount of spyware that it
has to look for (the list only gets bigger), drives it up to 45 min.
But hours, plural? 750MHz PIII's w/ 64MB of RAM? Or hyperbole?

To try to stay on topic, according to:
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0872842.html
"1981: Apple Viruses 1, 2, and 3 are some of the first viruses
“in the wild,” or in the public domain. Found on the Apple II
operating system, the viruses spread through Texas A&M via
pirated computer games."
