Well, CUPS can emulate a JetDirect, although you then don't get to
choose the queue. That takes care of Linux and OS X.

LPR shouldn't be TOO much harder, but there actually is somewhat of a
protocol.

Samba... I suspect WOULD be much harder.

But, I will say, many network printers do support JetDirect modes. And
things like wifi printers aren't all that unpopular.
