Re: Building a better BBS

Hey,

Some of us retired sysops have been tossing around the idea of building a better A2 BBS. Mostly for the novelty and so we can enjoy some classic computing, but maybe we can build something that's actually useful to the A2 user niche.

Geneb has put up a fresh copy of GBBS at:

telnet://aor.retroarchive.org

There is an active discussion there, some of which will be mirrored to this group as it develops.

My first thought is that for it to be useful, some type of mirroring to a newsgroup, and e-mail integration would have to exist. From what I hear, METAL and FutureVision had this capability. There has been some discussion in this newsgroup regarding METAL, but never any conclusive answers.

Who owns METAL? Is METAL a programming language like ACOS? Who owns it, and does he still lurk in these newsgroups?

What other options are available regarding an environment to start a collaborative A2 BBS project?

METAL is light years ahead of ACOS and would be a good base to start. Telnet access would be great. I had my old hacked up Metal BBS on the net for a while. So did Terry Olsen. The biggest drawback is the lack of multi-user. That is the biggest downfall of an A2 BBS on the net. Lotsa people, from all over the world, can, but can't get on at the same time...
