Hmmm interesting, do you reckon i could try by simply using a speaker
and see if i get sound out from any of the pins? or would this damage
that card?

You can be nearly certain that any power amplifiers are in the
external box, so you won't be able to drive speakers without it.

You probably have line outputs at the connector (possibly with
a DC offset, requiring a capacitor to block the DC).
