For your image to look proper it needs to use the same colour palette
that the Finder uses.

The Finder runs in 640x200 mode with 4 pure colours (2 bits/pixel) but
it can display 16 colours by using dithering.

To make matters worse, the 320 mode and 640 mode of the IIgs don't have
the same colours in them by default either so a 320 mode image that is
displayed in 640 mode without changing the palette will look funny.

I'm not sure if any of the programs that allow you to put an image on
the desktop will do any palette alterations or not. I've rarely used
those types of programs because of the problems with the differences
between 320 and 640 mode. I know that the one I played with on
SoftDiskGS (which I can't remember the name of off hand) actually had
patterns that were 320 or 640 mode specific.
