Don Lancaster used these things for ages with the GS and wrote tons of 
Postscript code to do everything from typesetting to drawing pictures. There 
is probably still lots of code on his website. He was very big on "publish on 
demand". I have not talked to him in a couple of years but I think he still 
is.
