I'm attempting to load the audio client via audio and the Apple never
returns from the
*2000.555CR <enter> command. I have checked the cables, switched
cables, and fiddled with the volume up and down almost full scale.
Never get a beep or error message.
The PC host seems to be sending audio data, at least it squeals if I
remove the cable from the PC audio out side.
That's encouraging. At least the audio is getting out of the PC. For
the bootstrapping operation, it's really only one-way, so you can
experiment with a single wire. Audio out to cassette in. Note that
the iconography of the IIe is backwards, at least from my
perspective... "cassette in" has an arrow pointing away from the
cassette. See:http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/connectionsaudio.html
Anyone get this to work? Are mono cables ok?
Yes, and yes. I happen to use stereo cables since that's all I have.
But here's two pieces of YouTube evidence that suggest it does in fact
work. Getting the audio levels (and connections) correct is
definitely fiddly,

Also, is there a way to get some sort of feedback from the Apple to
see if it is seeing any signals coming off the cassette-in port? For
example, the TRS-80 had a pair of blinking indicators and one could
sort of tell what was happening during cassette input by looking at
their activity.
Michael Mahon gave a neat example of echoing the cassette data to the
Apple spaker. The Great and Powerful Woz didn't give us visible or
audible feedback from the cassette the way the TRS-80 did (I hadn't
thought about those asterisks for years!). If you want to run
Michael's program, type this on the Apple:
CALL -151
300:AD 60 C0 AA 8A 4D 60 C0
308:10 FA 8D 30 C0 8A 49 80
310:4C 03 03
300G
and then have the ADTPro server send its data. You should be able to
swap cables until you hear the pitch change.
