Definitely synthesized, however it's NOT produced by the Ensoniq.
If you have a stereo card installed (which only taps into Ensoniq audio)
the IIgs "bonk" is not heard through attached speakers. It's basically
1-bit audio generated by the toggling the internal speaker on and off,
much the same way the Apple IIe "beep" is produced.
I still wonder, all these years later, can you reproduce the IIgs
"bonk" on a standard Apple IIe? I would say 'yes', unless there
is extra audio circuity that let's the GS produce more advanced
speaker toggling audio than the IIe, not related to the Ensoniq.
Similar to how the Apple III has a 6-bit DAC for audio.
