Getting FDHD drive mechs to slap into Apple 3.5" drives is the easy
part, and still pretty cheap.
Really, the only super-handy part of having a superdrive controller
and set of superdrives is being able to hot-swap storage devices, so
to speak: no need to shut down the Apple just to pull the CF card to
copy a bunch of files over, or to set up the FTP server and boot GSOS
in order to use FTP over the Uthernet.
I got mine 2 years ago for $75 from the Bay, and I consider it worth
the expense. I couldn't see spending any more for it, though...
