I suspect you're asking a question about the Mac, rather than the Apple

If you're running OS X 10.5, there's a supported mechanism in the System 
Preferences to change your account's short name (which is the name of 
your home folder among other implications). I'm not on a 10.5 machine 
right now, so this is from memory, but you start b activating the 
Accounts page and then right-click or control-click on your account name 
in the list on the left. There should be an item in the menu that says 
"advanced settings" or something like that.
