The Floating Point Engine was a math coprocessor card for the Apple IIgs.

Yes.

There are patches available that update SANE (the Standard Apple Numeric
Environment -- Apple's floating point math routines) to use the FPE. Any
program that uses SANE will then use the FPE.
Several math packages for the IIgs had support for the FPE and another
math coprocessor card called the Number Cruncher built-in. Among these are
