Let's say bidder A bids $15 on an item with a starting bid of $5.
The high bid will be shown as $5. Bidder B comes along and bids $7.
The high bid will now be shown as $7.50. Bidder B tries again and
bids $10. The high bid will now be shown as $10.50. Listing the bids
so far will show what you describe as "bids made by both bidders
against oneself".
