What you may be overlooking is that the Apple II can change what is
displayed on the screen *instantly* by flicking a softswitch, and
that flick can even be cycle-synchronized to the video refresh to
produce a coherent mixed-mode display.

I've never seen a second-frame-buffer model, of any design, that
can do this with results faithful to the Apple II itself.

My point is that there is no need to generate Apple II video--the
Apple II already does it.  All that's needed is to convert it to
VGA scan standards.

That would be pretty straightforward--easier than emulating Apple II
video, for sure--in modern logic, too.   In fact, it would be a couple
of chips if anyone bothered to make a video resampler chip that was
adaptable in its dot clock (but the market for that must be pretty
small).

With proper dot clock synchronization, or with suitable oversampling,
the VGA display produced should be perfect in every respect.

And this approach *never* has a bug related to incorrect emulation of
Apple II video generation.  ;-)

Before we can close the door and say that the Second Sight is a failed model, there is code out there that provides GS/OS desktop on the SVGA resolution screens. It never got released and I don't know how complete it is. Perhaps there should be an attempt to ask for it to be open sourced since there doesn't appear to be any commercial support for it now. Maybe somebody else would be interested to pick up where it was last left off.

I'd be happy to see this software come to light...

I don't mean that it's a failed model for implementing extended, non-
Apple video modes (though I consider that a fool's errand), but it has
never been demonstrated that it can produce a 100% compatible rendition
of Apple II video in all its multi-mode glory.  If the designer had a
year or two to develop firmware and couldn't get it right except under
fairly restrictive conditions, then I think it's fair to say that it was
not a suitable approach.
