Interesting. AFAIK those were mask ROMS, not EPROMS. Aren't they
supposed to last forever?
Back in the early 80's the UV erasable EPROMS were supposed to retain
the data for "about 10 years". Didn't bother me at the time as computer
years are like dog years :) I don't think I ever kept a PC for over a
few years, so who cares? I didn't think at the time that the longevity
of an Apple 2 would interest me well into the next century...
But seriously, why do mask-programmed PROMS fail so often?
