I don't understand that. I especially don't understand why we need data sets 
to understand algorithms.

Open is not the same as non-proprietary. For example, Java is proprietary 
but it's use is quite open. The proprietary status of Java was a major point 
in the Microsoft versus Sun legal actions of a few years ago.

I admit though that I was unfamiliar with the RAR format.
