The IP stack ADTPro uses won't respond to pings unless it's handling

Since you're using a crossover cable, I guess your laptop's IP address
is 169.something, and you assign 169.somethingelse to the Uther?
Don't you need a default route to get out to the cable, too?  I've
done it before (not with Uther, but just directly connecting two
laptops) and I remember having to get all the config elements on both
ends just right to get them to talk.
