ProDOS 8 does a similar thing in that when it starts up it looks for the
first file in the root directory that has a filename that ends in
".SYSTEM" and has a file type of SYS and will launch it.  You can have
multiple SYS files in the root directory and if you want to change which
one gets started automatically when you boot, all you have to do is
change the filename so only the one you want to start ends with
".SYSTEM".

I believe ProDOS 16 and GS/OS both do the same thing when they start.
The first thing they look for is a file of type S16 in the System folder
called "Start".  If that isn't found, then the root directory is
searched for an S16 file with a filename that ends in ".SYS16".  If that
isn't found, I can't remember how ProDOS 16 reacts but I know at least
later versions of GS/OS will run a simple program launcher that just
shows an open file dialog that lets you pick an application to launch.

I am going from memory here so I may have missed something so if anyone
