If you find all of the signals inside that are missing from the
joystick/mouse port,
then, YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they should work.

Yes, that's the issue with "compact" machines--if they don't have
the annunciators (which were on the internal 16-pin game port), then
they can't "talk".
I've considered an implementation that would use the speaker port for
a digital output and a pushbutton for an input; however, that would
not only re-use an output that is widely used (for sounds), but any
network activity would also sound quite raucus. ;-)
On the IIc and IIc+, the IOU is different, so you can't even tap
into the annunciator signals internally (they are re-used as soft
switches).
I'm less familiar with the Laser 128--maybe the annunciators are
still there...
NadaNet uses annunciator 1 and PB 1 for output and input.
