Yah, no disagreement there. I think these are popular because of the hacker
culture they represented. Why else would people slap down top dollar for
things like this... or an AppleCat.

How many people are using their AppleCats to dial-up anything, let alone
war-dial, phreak or whatever. Even fewer than those that were using it for a
RTC, serial port or an X-10 controller. Zero probably.

Nostalgia (which I too suffer from) or obsessive collecting, ie Pokemon
Syndrome - gotta catch 'em all.
