It's lubricant that isn't friendly to small electrical contacts.  It's
designed for those big old clunky mechanical tuners that were in TVs
in the 1960s.

Then you've been amazingly lucky.  I've had to repair many things that
were "fixed" using tuner cleaner, and at that point the repair is generally
to replace the switch.

Normal keyswitches (e.g., those from Cherry, ALPS, etc.) are designed to work
"dry", and any lubricant residue will eventually interfere with the electical
contacts.
