In order to boot a diskless IIgs over the network from a Mac server, you
need a Mac running the AppleShare server software with the Apple II boot
support installed.

The last version of AppleShare which supported this was AppleShare 3.0,
which requires Mac System 7.0. I doubt it will run on a PowerPC Mac at
all, or with a system as recent as Mac OS 9.1.

It was also possible with AppleShare 2.1, which runs on Mac System 6 and
takes over the entire operation of the Mac.

I've never run this myself and can't point you in the direction of the
server software.

Be warned: it is horribly slow. It is actually faster booting the IIgs
from a 3.5" floppy, but booting from the server has the advantage of a
much larger system volume so you can fit more toolsets, applications,
etc.

well, your right. it's doesn't work in os9, but is does appear to function in
8.5. by function i mean that it installs, doesn't report any errors and actually
works somewhat. speed is akin to the rate at which glass slowly flows toward
the bottom of a window pane, i mean super slow.

i let the installer run to see what would happen and it took over a hour to
copy the network system startup to the mac. the gs was capable of booting
diskless from the mac, but you would never want to use it. i had to cut my
testing short, but i would estimate it would have taken at least 15 minutes
to boot the gs.

can't understand the speed issue. using file sharing with os9 transfer speed
is respectable considering the age of the hardware, but with 8.5 nothing happens
very fast, at all.
