I'm also a fan of the 8-bit Apples, but I think the IIgs has someadvantages for the beginner. The built-in serial, printer and mouse portsmean that you don't have to invest in additional cards right off the bat.Also the ability to use AppleTalk and 800K drives is very handy, if youhappen to own an older Macintosh (makes getting files of the web fairlypainless).
