BTW, a little off the subject, but closely related: does anyone
have any information about Vintage Computing's plan to build a
64-processor C=64 "AppleCrate"? It seems not to have happened,
but I'm curious about the status and origin of the project...

"Commodore 64 Parallel Super Computer Project

In 1999, the VCF envisioned connecting 64 Commodore 64 computers
together to form one massively parallel Commodore 64 Super-Computer.
The project has sputtered and stalled but the vision has never died.
So this, being the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Commodore 64,
makes it imperative that we finally deliver on this vow to do what no
normally sane group of individuals would waste their time on.
"

so year of origin looks to be 1999..

Yes, after posting I began following links and discovered that
reference, too.

The first version of NadaNet was written in 1993, and the 'Crate
was conceived even then as a "space reduction" over lots of complete
Apple II systems. Construction awaited my retirement in 2000. ;-)

They want to "finally deliver" at VCF,

They were talking about VCF in November, 2007, so it sounds
like it didn't happen. And apparently the 16-processor prototype
didn't happen yet, either (at least no reports or technical info).

Commodore 64 Orchestra will be the first
to use it for music..

With SIDs in each processor, the potential for multi-voice
squarewaves is mind-boggling!

At least AppleCrate was the first "vintage multicomputer", and
also the first to play multi-voice wavetable-synthesized music. ;-)

It sounds like it's been built or is in the
process of being built.

Yes, like so many thousands of projects...

I suppose they are held captive by the name of the computer, C=64,
to build a 64-way system. At least with the Apple II, anything
beyond two systems is gravy! ;-)
