If ADT is like most Apple II comm programs and twiddles bits on the 6551
directly, the III's SSC emulation would have to extend down to the hardware
level (which would put the 6551's registers at $C0x8-$C0xB, for values of x
from 9 to F inclusive).  If it doesn't do that and instead only emulates the
functionality of the SSC firmware (which normally is only used for
printing), it's not going to work.

If the Apple III uses the 6551 for its serial port, though, then it should
be possible to add support for it.  ADT includes support for both the SSC
and IIGS serial ports, and they're based on completely different hardware;
adding Apple III support should be a matter of tweaking the SSC driver a
bit.
