Just had a look at the base of my two Apple IIgs systems. The serial
number of the ROM01 includes most of the model number (A2S6000W) in it
while the ROM03 does not. Is this the case for everyone else's
systems?

ROM01: E7020HBA2S6000X
ROM03: E03329VA0012X/A

Hmm, is the /A significant (indicating a revised system)? A quick
Google... Looks like it might be - http://www.vintage-computer.com/vcforum/archive/index.php/t-5119.html
says:

"The serial numbers for ROM3 machines seem to have a /A at the end. "

P.S. I just read the Apple Apple IIGS: VGC and ROM Upgrade KB article.
Looks like my ROM01 is old enough to have required both the VGC and
ROM01 upgrades. It has a Rev C VGC chip and the Rev B (ROM01) ROM so
no problems there.
