If you search this group for "usb disk" you'll come across a
thread titled "A2 5.25 drive on a PC?" which discusses this.
There are other similar threads IIRC.
I still think a microcontroller plus a few other bits would
easily be up to the task, with whole track reads and writes
almost certainly the best option.
Going to the sector level brings up a whole host of issues
that the thread above mentions, basically putting a Disk II
card and RWTS into your uC.
