You don't need to do it through disk first aid. If the mac doesn't recognise
the existing format it will ask you what you want to format it as.
If it does recognise the format... IIRC make sure the floppy is selected, go
to the top menu -> Special (That one may be wrong. Not too many options
there though) -> Erase Disk.
There is another option though. You may be able to get the Localtalk file
server running on the classic II. I have done it on a Classic using System
6, so I'm not sure about System 7.
Anyhow, I guess you need to make a few floppies first. But it is possible to
localtalk boot a ROM1 IIgs via a Classic without a boot floppy. I have done
it. Only ProDOS mind you. Just before I put System6 on the mac hard drive
it had a hardware failure :(
System 5 does not work right for a network boot. It can get as far as the
loading bar, but Finder Does not work, so an alternative startup needs to
be selected on the mac end of things. Reiterating, that it for System5,
ROM01.
The Classic seems to do a fair job of making floppies. I can't vouch for the
classic II though. As it has been said though, formatting on the IIgs first
does make a difference.
Hope this is a little useful to someone,
Tristan.
