HTTP is 8-bit clean--any client or server that assumes 7-bit data is broken. 
Web pages have a content-type header which describes the MIME-TYPE of the 
data.
 The HTTP protocol also supports encoding (i.e. gzip), but I have not seen 
that used by any Web sites.
