One data point. For several years now I'm getting DVDs by mail from NetFlix every few days and sending them back in nothing but a thin paper envelope. Not a single one was broken so far.

The way NetFlix ships would be the difference, they send the disks, sorted and boxed by Zip Code to a Regional Center, where they are either sent to the local post offices or another center, at that point they are then put back into the delivery system; I have gotten over the years a couple that have been broken which means they had been run through a sorting machine.
